Hello everybody
Welcome to Phatsworldpoetry blogspot sermon
Today is a special day, so special that I’ve dropped my usual poetry pen and instead donned the priestly robe.
Today I get to share with you the word from the good book and who knows I might probably save a soul.
A few days ago I wrote on my face book wall that my dad thought I should go to a bible school to become a preacher. Well, sort of.
And you know what happened, this good friend of mine, a high school mate, Benson and my cute cousin Elsie thought I couldn’t make the cut. I don’t blame them. Actually they are doubting Thomas’s I’m praying for them. I pray that God deals them with abounding love and compassion so that their eyes may open and they see the light.
However I do wish to sincerely thank them and my dad for inspiring me, and all you guys who were very encouraging whilst I was preparing this sermon. May the Lord bless you all.
Let’s pray.
Lord God we are grateful for this moment, for this day and for the Great days that lay ahead of us. Walk with us and strengthen us. Lead us that we may follow your ways upright and with confidence. Yet humble us lord that we may recognize your greatness and live according to your will. Amen.
I started reading the bible in earnest this year after acquiring it not so long ago. Before then, I was doing what everyone else who doesn’t have a bible does, borrow my dad’s or me mum’s. Soon after, I joined church and yes I’m still going.
So really, probably I may not have the creds to preach to any one of you. For I’m sure most of you if not all have done more church time than I have.
But I don’t want to preach to you, I don’t want to be a preacher even, only a promise of good tithe and tidy offerings every Sunday would make me change my mind! Ok, I’m kidding. But honestly what I want to is to share with you a few verses, Share an encouragement and if a can heal a broken heart while at it, why not?
Let’s get with it,
What’s your favourite verse? Everyone seems to have one. My cousin Mary’s favourite verse is in Deut 28, you must have read it or heard of it, ``you will lend to many but you will not borrow’’. And thank God for that because if you walk up to Mary needing a loan she will not turn you down, she will be eager to loan you- of course with interest! I hope you know I’m kidding, that last part.
I will be glad to receive your favourite verse too cos I’m just to share mine with you. I promise not to make a joke out of it here!
Mine is, ``trust in the lord and do good’’ psalms 37:3. I read it once and I’m a changed man, my friends are so happy cos I’ve been so good to them ever since! Really.
That verse really stood out for me because I couldn’t really wrap my mind around it. The trust in the lord part yes I could understand, but do good?
How do you do good? Yet time and time again the bible urges us to do good. The verses are all over,
Psalms 37:3 trust in the lord and do good.
1st peter 3:13, - who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
Galatians 6; 10, - therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good.
Galatians 6:9 - let us not be weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap the harvest if we do not give up.
Hebrews 13: 16, - and do not forget to do good for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
And trust me, there are more and more about doing good. Doing good in biblical terms then is major.
Being good is an action, it’s a choice, it’s an attitude and to some it might as well be a way of life. To do good you must choose to act in that manner, you must have a good will. You must mean well. You must have a sense of good will in you. Interestingly, even in philosophy and metaphysics, in a branch called Deontology, a big word that simply means study of duty, Immanuel Kant who is arguably the authority in matters to do with Ethics and Morals puts it this way, ``the good will is the only unconditional good’’. So doing good, or the willingness to act in good ways is not only ethical and necessary to good morals, but it makes us better human beings.
The bible urges us all, you and me, to do good and to show goodness to other people. To our workmates, to our siblings, to clients and all that.
And you know what, in the bible there is always a reward if we follow the word. `Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good’’. That’s a promise for you right there. You will not encounter any harm so long as you are eager to do good. Well someone will say, but I do good a lot of the times but I still suffer somehow. And I will tell you haven’t read verse 14 still on 1st peter 3, ``but even if you should suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Tell me that is not cool! Doing good, doing right earns us a blessing just like that.
And it doesn’t end there, in verse 10, it says, ` whoever loves life- and good days, he must turn away from evil and do good’’
So for us to see good days, and I know we are all hoping for good days and even working towards that somehow, we must not only turn away from evil, but we must also do good.
Doing good becomes a pre-cursor to having and seeing good days.
And doing good cannot be that hard really. Psychologists tell as that to make an action a habit we have to repeat that action only 21 times. How easier can it get for us if we really want to get into that habit, to adopt it as our attitude? And I’m sure most of us do good at least once a day. So we are not starting from nothing. All we have to do is up it. If you normally good once or twice in a day, how about you make it three or four times?
Start now and call that friend that you have not spoken to for weeks, call a friend who is struggling and assure them things will get better, give them hope. Call your son, send someone a surprise text, it will make their day. Be kind to a stranger or go all the way and send me your end of the month paycheck! Ok, not really. But get in the habit of doing good. In proper time you will reap the harvest if you do not give up.
Let us trust in the lord and do good. Let us get into the practice. Start today and you will not cheer a heart but God will be pleased.
As we wind, let the peace of Christ rule your hearts. Col 3:15.
God bless you and I hope you are all blessed.
Amen.
